Too Big To Compute

Ever notice how perspective shifts when there’s no benchmark? The vastness of a place can swallow you, enveloping a person deep into it’s space without seeing the bigger picture.

That’s maybe the best way I can summarize New Zealand. Everywhere you turned evoked a “Holy shit that’s unreal!” The glacial rivers, jagged peaks and snowy landscapes made me understand just why so many productions come here. I had a stupid smile on my face the majority of the time just because of the mountains. I felt like an idiot. But a happy idiot.

We were in country supporting a large production for an ad campaign chasing the winter conditions. But aside from the excitement of the job, I think my favorite memory of this whole place was actually away from it all. Our small US based team walked from the crew dinner back to our lodging for the night. It might have been a mile or less, but we were surrounded by silence, and only stars above. I can’t remember what we talked about, but we owned the road that night, walking in the middle of the lane and breathing easy, remembering what the mountains looked like at sunset. It’s an almost sacred memory.

If you get the chance to go to NZ, don’t hesitate, just book the flight.
